Our focal points

Berlin is our centre of focus. The BGZ contributes to the implementation of the policies of the Berlin Senate and to the promotion of Berlin small trade.

We support the idea of the European network and assist our associates in achieving Europe competence. Personal contact and an exchange of ideas enable our partner organisations and everyone involved to encounter and experience Europe, often far beyond the project.

Vocational training

The European education area needs cross-border cooperation from educational establishments. We are testing innovative educational concepts with our partners. Most important is the establishing of common standards of quality in vocational training. Our scope ranges from mobility projects for teachers and internships in a foreign country for disadvantaged young people in Berlin to the establishment of training centres abroad. Our projects for the implementation of such European standards as EQR and ECVET have already been awarded several prizes. Their results have already been incorporated in vocational and further education courses from trade and tertiary education in many European countries.

Promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

Small and medium-sized enterprises are the very backbone of the economy, not only in Berlin but also in our partner countries. The BGZ supports cross-border cooperation between chambers, guilds and associations and furthers the competitive capability of SMEs through tailor-made qualification opportunities. Our projects to ensure that the demand for technical specialists can be met contribute to the future viability of the region. Networks with partners in private and public sectors guarantee practical orientation and the firm establishment of our results.

Integration of immigrants

Berlin is a city shaped by its many cultures. The BGZ has become the link between these cultures, thanks to its thirty years of experience in international cooperation. Our projects for the vocational integration of immigrants develop potential, making it available to the Berlin economy. We try and test new ways of qualification and encourage the implementation of informally acquired skills. Campaigns against racism and xenophobia are as much a part of our programme as projects for the intercultural opening up of organisations.

Administrative cooperation

The BGZ furthers Berlin’s international networking within the EU and with the partner cities. We support the Berlin Senate, boroughs, vocational schools and subordinate public bodies, such as the Berlin Fire Department and the Berlin Police in setting up international collaboration and in the realization of EU projects. We can ease the burden on the specialist administration departments through our recognized competence in project management and fund management. Many projects are set up cross-departmental and contribute to the implementation of the State of Berlin’s political guidelines and master plan concepts.

Development cooperation and global learning

The main reason the BGZ was founded was to implement the State of Berlin’s development-policy cooperation with Turkey. Development cooperation is our basic raison d’être. We stand for cooperative partnership and are committed to the Agenda 21 and to the State of Berlin’s development policy guidelines.

Together with the State Office for Development Cooperation and Berlin NGOs, we are contributing to the establishment of global learning in educational practice and the implementation of the UNESCO's Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development. Our pilot projects on energy-efficient building, development education, and on fair trade have already been granted several awards.
